"If a man keep my saying"
Through Christian Science mankind is awakening to a realization of the eternality of Life, God, and of the consequent unreality of death, which is but a false belief in the absence of Life. Belief in death helps to perpetuate a fear of death.
While believing God, Life, to be the cause of mortality, the opposite of Himself, the world loses much of the vital significance of Christ Jesus' words and works, for his mission was to prove to mankind the eternality of Life. In every instance Jesus was obedient to the law of God. Had God instituted death, Jesus would not have tried, nor would he have been able, to raise Lazarus, Jairus' daughter, or the son of the widow of Nain from death, nor would he himself have reappeared after the crucifixion. He said, "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." If one will cease believing that he can be separated from immortal Life, God, and constantly cling to that which is true about himself, as God's child, he will overcome the belief in death as having any reality.
The student of Christian Science naturally turns to the writings of Mary Baker Eddy for the inspired explanation of vital Biblical passages. In referring to Jesus' words, just quoted, Mrs. Eddy says in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 429, 430): "That statement is not confined to spiritual life, but includes all the phenomena of existence. Jesus demonstrated this, healing the dying and raising the dead;" and in the same paragraph she says: "When man gives up his belief in death, he will advance more rapidly towards God, Life, and Love. Belief in sickness and death, as certainly as belief in sin, tends to shut out the true sense of Life and health. When will mankind wake to this great fact in Science?"
