Since I first began the study of Christian Science, over thirty years ago, I have experienced many healings. My first healing was of acute Bright's disease, which two physicians claimed would permit me to live not more than a year, and of which I was healed in less than two months' time. Other ailments which have yielded to the application of Truth in my experience have been pneumonia, influenza, kidney stones, diabetes, and blood poisoning. For these and many other proofs of the healing power of Truth, I am humbly grateful.

As a young officer of field artillery, during the first World War, I had many opportunities to prove the efficacy of Christian Science in healing not only sickness, but other inharmonious and ofttimes seemingly difficult conditions as well. Through one experience in particular, I came to a greater appreciation than ever before of the significance of the first tenet of Christian Science (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. p. 497), "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."

My mother, who has long been a student of Christian Science, gave me a Bible for my twenty-third birthday, when I was in the United States Army. On the flyleaf she wrote, "May the truth contained in these pages be your 'shield and buckler.'" It proved to be exactly that.
