In 1911 I sought Christian Science...

In 1911 I sought Christian Science to see what its plan of salvation was, for I had become dissatisfied with the teachings of my former church. According to all I had been taught about God and the hereafter, I was hopelessly lost, but I know now that I was lost because I did not know then what I needed to be saved from. I had trusted "the unknown God," but no longer had faith in Him or in man, and thought I would rather die than face the blank darkness in front of me.

This mental state brought on a complicated illness, with something that today would be termed a stroke. A growth or tumor developed in the side, together with a bad heart condition, which the attending physician said would prevent my recovery, and he refused to treat me. I became a drag-about, and resigned myself to wait for my time to pass on.

I knew no Christian Scientists, but had heard this religion mentioned once or twice, and, desiring to investigate all denominations that came my way, in hope of finding one to which I could tack my faith, I wrote to The Christian Science Publishing Society, telling them I wanted to know something about Christian Science. I was sent a copy each of the Journal, Sentinel, and Monitor.
