The Christian Scientist Today

Most of us have at some time been stirred from a rut of spiritual indifference and have been raised to fuller metaphysical effort by the impressive example of a real Christian Scientist. Christ Jesus is of course, our foremost figure of encouragement and inspiration. And through adherence to his teachings many present-day Christian Scientists provide heartening and uplifting examples which inspire those about them.

"A real Christian Scientist is a marvel, a miracle in the universe of mortal mind. With selfless love, he inscribes on the heart of humanity and transcribes on the page of reality the living, palpable presence—the might and majesty!— of goodness. He lives for all mankind and honors his creator." So Mary Baker Eddy pays tribute to the "real Christian Scientist" in "Miscellaneous Writings" ( p. 204). And surely, she who was qualified to discover this Science of Christ and elucidate it to mankind, is the superb exemplification of a genuine Christian Scientist in this age. We all strive to merit the name "Christian Scientist." and, according to the extent of our willingness to work and to live aright, we are successful.

Today, when we are being asked to go to war, to work in war plants, or in other ways to volunteer our services in the cause of freedom, we do what we can—and sometimes more than we think we can. The human footsteps must be taken. But human effort alone will not solve the problems of the present conflict. With so much at stake, is not the need great for checking our status as Christian Scientists, and striving daily to elevate if? We can better fulfill the important demands of wartime duties if we are also fulfilling the urgent requirements of being a Christian Scientist of the highest degree.
