Church Dedications
Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.
Newburgh, New York (First Church).—Liquidation of indebtedness on First Church of Christ. Scientist, Newburgh, was marked at dedication services for its new edifice on Sunday morning, December 20, 1942. The handsome stone building at 188 Grand Street was first used for services on March 16, 1941, but dedication was delayed until all debts had been cleared.
The First Reader traced the history of the church from its beginning in 1905. In September of that year services were held in G. A. R. rooms. In 1908, larger quarters were obtained in Columbus Trust building, and in 1916 the congregation moved to the Academy of Music building.
A residence was purchased in 1917 and remodeled for church services, on the site of the present structure. This was outgrown by 1940, when a building committee accepted a bid to raze the old building and construct a new church. Services were held in the Y. W. C. A. building while the new church was being built.
