Overcoming Absenteeism

We are hearing much today of absenteeism. This form of mesmerism is appearing in some of our war industries and essential occupations. It is even trying to express itself in some of our churches, particularly at our regular Wednesday evening meetings.

It is therefore our duty, as loyal Christian Scientists, to know the truth about this error. And we can best know the truth about absenteeism by referring to two statements by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" we read (p. 287), "God being everywhere and all-inclusive, how can He be absent or suggest the absence of omnipresence and omnipotence?" And on page 116 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy has set forth this illuminating truth: "Obeying the divine Principle which you profess to understand and love, demonstrates Truth. Never absent from your post, never off guard, never ill-humored, never unready to work for God,—is obedience."

None of us would admit that we were ever "unready to work for God." good. And none of us would knowingly be led to believe that God is ever unready to help us. Working for our churches and for our country is truly working for God. It is work that can and should be filling our every moment: work from which we need never take a vacation, from which we need no rest. It is work that will refresh us the longer and the more earnestly we work.
