Words cannot express my sincere...

Words cannot express my sincere gratitude to God for Christian Science, for our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. Christian Science has been in our home for almost twenty years. Our children always have attended the Sunday school.

It was not physical healing that prompted me to study Christian Science. After the stock market debacle of 1929, I was forced out of a business enterprise, and other reverses found me with nothing to lean upon and not a thread to grasp. I was out of work, and my wife took over the management of a sixteen-unit apartment house, which gave us a roof over our heads. Many times our boy, who was then about nine years old, brought home from the sale of newspapers amounts which enabled us to eat for the evening.

During the first few years as a student of Christian Science much good came into my life. I became a member of a branch church and of The Mother Church, and had class instruction. The latter experience lifted my thought spiritually. In 1933, notice was given to us to move out of the house, because of business conditions and our inability to pay rent. The public utility company had turned off the gas and lights for the same reason. I applied myself diligently all day long, sometimes ten hours at a stretch, to the study and reading of the Bible, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the Christian Science periodicals. However, during these days I refused to acknowledge lack, and continued to subscribe to The Christian Science Monitor on the monthly basis through the Circulation Committee on which I was a worker. I felt this was one way of expressing sincere gratitude for Christian Science, for what it had done and was doing for me and my family.
