I wish to give joyful thanks to...
I wish to give joyful thanks to God for a recent healing which a member of my family experienced through Christian Science.
One Saturday afternoon our small son, aged five, was fretful, and unwilling to leave his mother. At first we thought this was due only to the fact that his mother has lately taken on work which keeps her away from home all day during the week; however, towards the evening he complained of pain in his ear and was very hot. Work was taken up for him as we are taught in Christian Science, and in particular the thought of fear as an obstruction to the expression of harmony was denied. After a short period the child went off to sleep. A little later he awoke and said that his ear was wet, and it was found to be discharging. He was much cooler and passed a reasonable night except for periodical requests to have his ear dried. During Sunday his ear continued to discharge freely; that evening he was again a little hot and work was again undertaken to meet the suggestion of relapse and to assert that, as we are told in the Bible, "Affliction shall not rise up the second time." The next morning he was very much distressed when my wife had to go off to her work. (I should explain that I had been at home on leave from the Army and had had to return to duty by a late train on Sunday night.) It was impossible for my wife to be relieved from her work, but a neighbor and friend kindly spent a good part of the day with the child. Soon the ear drained satisfactorily, and the healing was complete.
Besides my great gratitude for the healing itself, I am very grateful for the manner of it. Some years ago the child of neighbor suffered from a mastoid abscess, had very great pain, and finally underwent an operation. After this my wife for a long time had a lurking fear that sometime one of our children might be faced with the same trouble, and wondered whether she would find herself able to stand fast and trust Christian Science in such a case. I realize now that in this instance we were faced with a similar condition, and we saw the whole trouble met and mastered by Christian Science before we even knew how serious to medical thought it was. It was indeed a case of "before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear," as the Scriptures say.
