After an X-ray examination by...
After an X-ray examination by a physician, my ailment was pronounced water on the lungs, and I was bound with adhesive tape. About two years later, when I found myself in bed twenty-four hours a day, I realized there was nothing to be gained by returning to materia medica.
It was then I remembered seeing a relative instantaneously freed from a very bad attack of asthma after she had asked me to call a Christian Science practitioner. This led me to turn to Christian Science for help, and within two weeks I was able to be up all day. After studying but a short time I could see I was being consumed with resentment, self-pity, self-justification, and the like. It was pointed out to me by the practitioner that our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 210): "Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full."
Clearly my work was to replace every consuming thought of hate with life and love. This process was slow. I had help from the practitioner for a while, then went on by myself until fear gripped me, when I was again obliged to appeal for treatment. I should like to say, for the benefit of anyone who may be feeling discouraged because he has not received his answer, that I was often discouraged. Eight years elapsed before I was entirely free, but the growth gained through study and perseverance was ample repayment for the slow healing.
