"Called unto liberty"

Today we are called upon to cast aside selfish aims and ambitions for the purpose of establishing the brotherhood of man. Paul appealingly wrote to the Galatians, "Brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." These foolish Galatians had forgotten the pure and undefiled religion of Christianity, as preached to them by this intrepid apostle on his visit to them. They had been influenced to fall back into the ways of self-indulgence, rivalry, and intemperance. Theirs was a material sense of freedom unrestrained, used in selfish pleasure and regardless of the rights of others.

Such a mistaken sense as Paul describes in this chapter of his epistle—wherein are included also the spiritual correctives and their glorious fruits—is the very antithesis of the God-bestowed freedom to which one awakes through the blessed teachings of Christian Science. It is significant that Christian Science reveals God, Love, as divine Principle, which frees by governing without variation and without partiality. At times one may doubt that his prayers are being answered, despite his illumined understanding of Science, whereas it is later revealed that the true answer to his prayer is in the protection from unwise moves which would have interfered with the ultimate harmony of the situation.

Let us see what is the part we should play in order to conform to the government by divine Principle, with the unrestricted succor that follows obedience, and joyfully say, as did the Psalmist, "The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage." This expresses an unbounded and enthusiastic appreciation of God's gift of freedom. How vigilant we must be at this time to maintain an undisturbed state of consciousness even amidst the disquieting reports of havoc wrought by evil!
