Winged Victory

[Written Especially for Young People]

Climbing into the cockpit of his training plane at a Midwest flying field, a young student pilot prepared to make his first solo flight. Carefully checking his instrument panel, he switched on the power, the groundmen cried, "Contact!" and the plane taxied down the field for the takeoff.

Now this is no ordinary occasion, as every flyer knows. This is the great moment, the test upon which much of the future course depends. Knowing this, the young flyer's every faculty was centered upon right performance of the task before him.

He had previously acquired a working knowledge of Christian Science through attendance at Sunday school and study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As the plane began to rise, he earnestly affirmed the presence of God, divine Mind, and declared that this ever-present Mind was instantly available to meet his every need. Mounting higher, he felt a growing sense of confidence and freedom as the earth receded below him, and there came to him the reassuring words of the Psalmist, "If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."
