Christian Science is indeed...
Christian Science is indeed opening my eyes to "behold wondrous things out of thy law."
For many years prior to my study of this Science, I had longed to understand and to demonstrate the healing power of the teachings of Jesus. I was earnestly seeking some solution to my physical and financial problems. Often I had wonderful results through prayer, but the troubles kept returning, sometimes in more acute forms. At last, in great distress of mind and body, I offered constant and importunate prayers of petition to God to be shown just what was retarding the solution. The answer came through a gradual but clear realization of two mistakes I was making. First, I was relying on medicine, although with an increasing doubt of its efficacy. Secondly, I was looking to some understanding friend, or religious leader or group, to pray with me, rather than depending calmly and radically on my own intuitive sense of God's guidance.
Some time after these thoughts began to awaken me, I was led to go to a Christian Science practitioner. During the first interview I became so much interested in what was told me about Christian Science and Mrs. Eddy that I forgot to explain just what my problems were. As I arose to go, the practitioner asked me what my difficulty was. I then told her of the doctor's diagnosis of high blood pressure and serious heart trouble. After reassuring me, she said: "There is one thing that I want to ask of you. I want you to be obedient." I am very grateful for this emphasis upon obedience. Many times thereafter it helped me and enabled me to stand fast in hours of severe stress and strain.
Sincerely desirous of knowing the truth that makes one free, I then began very earnestly to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Medicine was entirely given up, and I began to understand more about God and how to look solely to Him in every need. At this time the following citations were very helpful (Science and Health, p. 167): "We cannot serve two masters nor perceive divine Science with the material senses;" and (ibid., p. 169): "The sick are never really healed except by means of the divine power. Only the action of Truth, Life, and Love can give harmony."
During all this time, the loving help and consecrated work of the practitioner was releasing me from many fears and false beliefs, and from their effect upon my disposition and general outlook upon life. Then followed healings of the heart trouble, blood pressure, and other physical ills. An attack of appendicitis was healed in one treatment. Problems of lack were also solved through my directing thought to infinite, ever-present divine Love as the source of all true employment and income. I saw that spiritual ideas are one's income, and that spiritual activity is the only real employment. "The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love" (ibid., p. 113).
I am deeply grateful for all that Christian Science has done and is doing for me and for my family. I am most appreciative also of the loving interest shown me by Christian Science friends, and I am especially thankful for the patient, unselfed services of the practitioner who is showing me by demonstration the meaning of "the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."—(Mrs.) Lucie Peterson Cole, Baltimore, Maryland.
