Topic: The Christian Life
[Rev. James Reid, D. D., in the British Weekly, London, England]
There is only one way in which we can find what it all means, one way of looking at life which can give us a sense of vital purpose. It is the Christian faith. Nothing less than what it says to us about God and ourselves will answer the riddle. Nothing less will make the whole picture intelligible and light up our own personal lives with meaning. The key to life for us all is to begin where John began: "Now are we the sons of God."
This was what Jesus came to make us realize. It was his unfailing antidote to the sense of futility and worthlessness. It is the only safe way out of what we call the sense of inferiority. That is where futility often has its roots. If we feel that we do not matter, we feel also that what we do does not matter. ... When God called Moses, Isaiah, and Jeremiah to their lifework, the first obstacle He had to remove, before His purpose could lay hold of them, was their sense of inferiority. ... A new and wonderful meaning comes into life when we see our status in the love of God and are able to say, "Now are we the sons of God." ...
