Christian Science came to me...
Christian Science came to me during the worst of the so-called depression, at a time when every material prop had failed me. My husband had had no work for months, and I was suffering from a disease the doctor pronounced pellagra, and had no funds to pay for the treatment he prescribed. A friend and former music teacher asked me to try Christian Science, and gave me a number of copies of the Journal and Sentinel to read.
From the first I knew I had found the truth, the key to the solving of all my problems, and I began to read almost constantly. The second week I discarded all material remedies and was able to do my laundry without even a sense of fatigue. In every article I read, I noticed quotations from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and, oh, how I wanted this book! Money with which to buy a book at that time seemed an impossibility, but a practitioner in a near-by city borrowed one for me, telling me that I might keep it for four weeks, by which time he expected I should be demonstrating something of what I had learned and would own my own copy.
I little knew the meaning of the term "demonstration," but the glorious fact that all the beautiful promises in the Bible were not just words, but were actually provable, was beginning to dawn upon my awakening spiritual sense, and taking the one, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," I tried in every way possible to put it into practice. I read constantly, trying to gain a better understanding of God. I did all the loving and kind things I could find to do for others, and above all I expected to possess a copy of the textbook. At the end of the four weeks I had two copies, one of them bought with the first three dollars we had had in months. We needed many things, even food, but I knew that this money had come to me to buy the book and that much depended upon my obedience. A few weeks thereafter I was employed in my regular profession of teaching at a salary ample for all our needs. The pellagra was healed from the first.
