Many years ago Christian Science was presented to me by kind friends. At that time I was materially prosperous, was quite content with the happiness of daily life, and thought that Science was probably a good line of study for those who were in need of it.

As the years passed by, my health began to fail, and I collapsed from a bad nervous breakdown. After prolonged medical treatment I was told that nothing further could be done for me, but in a flash I remembered what I had read and heard of Christian Science. The next day I visited the local Christian Science Reading Room, borrowed a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and after having a long, convincing talk with the librarian, I was instantaneously healed.

After this healing I kept in touch with Christian Science in rather a casual way, but several years later I was attacked with another breakdown, which culminated in acute heart trouble. This collapse compelled me to retire from my career in the civil service, and although I studied Science diligently and sought the help of several practitioners, yet the healing did not come. During the pursuance of long, fervent study, I encountered many physical trials, fears, disappointments, and doubts, and at times got very much discouraged; still I never gave up hope, and eventually woke up to the fact that I myself must make a supreme effort to overcome this mesmerism. I began to realize that my suffering was due to a false mental picture of a mortal selfhood apart from God, and the healing came.
