From infancy I experienced a...
Selected.
From infancy I experienced a serious condition of lameness, called by many physicians and surgeons hip-joint disease. Probings began when I was four years old, and continued until I was a woman of almost middle age. Four open wounds had had to be taken care of daily for over thirty years. In 1902 I began to read the Christian Science Sentinel, looking for healing. I had been told that I could be healed, but I believed I had something the matter with me that nothing could help.
In October, 1916, I was ordered to the hospital for a major operation, the diagnosis being that in all probability the limb would have to be amputated at the hip-joint, and even then the operation might not be a success. At five o'clock on the evening previous to the day that I was to go to the hospital, I went to see a Christian Science practitioner, and as I was admitted to his office, suffering beyond words, I said to him, "I want to know everything you know about Christian Science, right now." The practitioner picked up his Bible and asked me if I was familiar with it. My reply was that I was reared in a home where there was a Bible in every room and on every table. He then asked me what I knew about God, about Christ, and about man. "Nothing," was all I could say. This dear worker then proceeded to tell me about God, Christ Jesus, and man's relationship to God as taught in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. He then lent me a copy of the textbook for two weeks, with the understanding that if I was still interested in it I could purchase a copy of my own. Before two weeks my interest was so keen that I wanted my own book. I know now that I had an instantaneous mental healing, for I walked home as if on air, with no further use of the cane or crutches which I had previously been using for many years. The physical condition was completely healed within a year, and the limb has remained in perfect condition ever since.
The first thing in Science and Health that attracted my attention at that time was "the scientific statement of being" (p. 468), which reads in part: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." The twenty-third Psalm was also a great help. Through the Bible and the spiritual interpretation of the Bible as given in the Christian Science textbook, and with the help of many practitioners during this time, I experienced many physical healings, including those of sick headaches, stomach derangements, constipation, chronic colds, and, most of all, the straightening and strengthening of the spinal cord, which enabled me to be an active business woman for many years.
