Christian Science was presented...
Christian Science was presented to me through a stranger who, in a conversation, told me it would heal me. I had never heard of it before. I asked what it was, and was told that Christian Scientists believe in a God who is Love, a God who is good. I knew as soon as those words were spoken that that was the God I wanted to believe in. This dear one made me a gift of the Bible, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the Christian Science Quarterly, and told me to read. That was all that was told me. I had not mentioned to my new friend that I had not been able to read for several years because of defective eyesight. But I took the copy of Science and Health, a small edition, and sat down one morning at eight-thirty to read. I could not see a word. But I sat there and said, "God is good; God is Love; and I can see nothing but good, for my God is good." Then I began with my finger to pick out the words "God," "good," "Love." I do not think it was more than fifteen minutes before I was reading every word. When I looked at the clock, it was five-thirty in the afternoon. I had been reading for nine hours. I then realized that I was healed. I said aloud, "My sight is indeed spiritual." I got up and threw out a basket of medicine.
In a short time I was healed of a goiter by repeating "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). I was also healed of constipation, indigestion, sick headaches, and a great sense of weakness; many other ailments disappeared through the reading of Science and Health. Christian Science has been my only physician for twenty years.
I should like to relate an experience which occurred seven years ago. On marrying a widower with two girls, who were not Scientists, I found I was not wanted in the home by the elder girl. This brought about much discord between the father and me. It came to the place where I was asked to leave the home and a divorce was mentioned. But I took my stand, as we are taught to do in Christian Science, and knew that this condition was not of God. I knew it could be worked out in Christian Science, so I asked the help of a practitioner. I am grateful to her for the encouragement that she gave to me. She told me to watch my thinking, and to go about rejoicing and trying to see only the perfect man, who is made in God's image and likeness, and therefore can never be divorced or separated in any way from divine Mind. Man, as an idea of Mind, is always in his right place and always reflecting all right ideas. I am happy to say there was no divorce, and the two girls have been attending the Christian Science Sunday School for six years now. I am also grateful to say that nothing but love and the greatest affection and consideration is being expressed between this girl and me.
