In the first chapter of Joshua we read: "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." This verse was of great comfort to me and assured me of God's presence when our boat, the "Robin Moor," was torpedoed in the South Atlantic on the twenty-first of May, 1941, fifteen days after we had sailed from New York for Cape Town.

The commander of the submarine said he intended to sink our ship, and he gave us twenty minutes to dress and leave. There were four lifeboats; my husband and I, with five other passengers, including a child of two years, were told to join boat No. 2. This boat was in charge of the first officer and four other men. The boats were all lowered safely to the sea.

The "Robin Moor" was torpedoed through the engine room, but she stood sturdily on the sea until the commander of the submarine had fired thirty-three shots into her from the submarine deck gun, and then she sank.
