[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in these columns can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on November 1, 1942.]

"To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth" (Lam. 3:34)—Dr. Moffatt brings out a somewhat different sense by rendering: "When a whole people is taken prisoner and downtrodden," though Smith's translation corresponds more closely to that of our Common Version.

"The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes" (Ps. 19:8)—Professor Briggs contends that here "the eyes" are "the eyes of the mind," enlightened "so that they may see and understand" (Commentary on Psalms: Vol. I, p. 169). Compare Moffatt's rendering: "The Eternal's command is clear, a light to the mind."
