Among the Churches

Current Notes

Seattle, Washington (Sixth Church).—The dedication of Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle, on Sunday, February 8, 1942, is of special interest because it comes about largely through the united effort on the part of the eleven Christian Science churches in Seattle, acting through a central dedication committee, to pay off their capital indebtedness. It has long been a tradition among Christian Scientists not to dedicate their churches until entirely free from debt.

Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle, is a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. This church was founded by Mary Baker Eddy, who, in 1866, discovered the Christ Science, and later state it in her now famous "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Branches of The Mother Church are now established in all parts of the world.

The edifice of Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle, was first used in January, 1930. It is located at the corner of West Lander and Forty-second Avenue South-west. The church had its beginning in a small group of Christian Science students, who in 1914 got together and formed a society, later incorporated into a church. Services were held in the West Seattle Masonic Hall until the congregation moved into the present edifice. With the dedication of this church the ten completed Christian Science churches in Seattle are paid for.
