Bible Notes
[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on September 28, 1941.]
"The tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them" (Rev. 21:3)—The word which is here rendered "tabernacle" means literally "tent," but was often used in the more general meaning of "dwelling place." Goodspeed renders: "God's dwelling is with men, and he will live with them;" while Moffatt has: "God's dwelling-place is with men, with men will he dwell."
"The former things are passed away" (Rev. 21:4)—The Twentieth Century New Testament suggests the translation: "The old order has passed away;" while Moffatt has: "The first things have passed away."
"These words are true and faithful" (Rev. 21:5)—The Greek term which is rendered "true" in this verse has the more literal meaning of "that which can be relied on;" while a more exact translation of the term translated "faithful" would be "true," or, alternatively, "sincere, veracious." The Riverside New Testament suggests: "trustworthy and true"; while Moffatt renders: "trustworthy and genuine."
