Early in the year 1919, I was called upon to make a long journey, but felt physically unable to go. The doctor said that I had a cancerous sore of the intestines, and he gave me one medicine to take three times a day and another every hour. Instead of obtaining relief I was fast becoming more alarmed concerning my condition.
I was antagonistic toward Christian Science, but finally yielded to the recommendation of a member of my family, who had been a student of Science for some time, and I called on a practitioner and asked for help. Upon being seated, I asked for a piece of writing paper and a pencil; I had so much the matter with me I was afraid of forgetting something. The kind practitioner said: "My dear, that is not the way it is done. Tell me what is uppermost in your mind." I began by telling her what the doctors had said, and went on to enumerate some of the thoughts that I was entertaining about myself. Then I asked if she thought she could do anything for me. Her answer was: "You know there is nothing impossible with God. 'Man's extremity is God's opportunity.'" At once the thought came to me that I had never before turned to God for anything like this, and perhaps now I would get help.
The first hour spent in that practitioner's office was one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had. She began by showing me that healing was here for me just the same as when Jesus was walking on the earth; that all God's promises throughout the Bible are true. One of the most comforting things she told me was Mrs. Eddy's statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." From that time on I was a changed person, for the light of the Christ, Truth, had begun to dawn upon me. Consequently, in a short time after leaving the practitioner's office I discovered that I had received an instantaneous healing of the cancerous condition. That was more than twenty years ago, and there has not been the slightest symptom of its return.
