Bible Notes
[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on February 16, 1941.]
"Open thou mine eyes" (Ps. 119:18) The Hebrew verb which is here translated "open" has the more literal meaning of "reveal," "uncover," or "remove." So one might well translate: "Uncover my eyes"; or, as Smith suggests: "Unveil my eyes."
"Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven . . . and let them be for signs, and for seasons" (Gen. 1:14) The Hebrew term which is here translated "seasons" means literally "appointed times"; hence the reference is not necessarily limited to our four seasons, but can refer to the regular migrations of birds (compare Jer. 8:7), the recurring festivals of the Jewish year (see Lev. 23:4), as also the periods throughout the year at which special events occurred. Moffatt renders: ". . . to mark out the sacred seasons."
