Although I have known of Christian Science and its...
Although I have known of Christian Science and its healing message since 1919, I did not consider taking up the study of this truth until driven to seek hope for the recovery of my small son, whom the physicians pronounced gravely ill with infantile paralysis.
Shortly before this experience my husband had expressed his desire to take our three small sons out of an orthodox church of which I had been a member since childhood, and place them in a Christian Science Sunday School. He had become interested in this religion during the World War, but had been inactive for several years. I consented, believing it to be a temporary arrangement, but in this the boys had the decision and it was in favor of Christian Science. Their interest led me to wonder at a religion that could be so attractive to small children. I learned from them that in Sunday school they talked about the all-loving Father-Mother God. I gradually began to accompany my husband to the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, but while learning to appreciate the significance of this inspiring service, I felt I could not accept this teaching as a healing agency.
The test came, for things material had failed us in dealing with our small son's critical condition. I shall never forget or cease to appreciate the practitioner and the message she brought that midnight hour. In just a few hours we saw the entire situation changed. The boy's healing was a marvel to our friends and neighbors and in the touching of the seamless robe of the Christ, Truth, we had for the first time felt the power of the Word. I shall ever cherish the words, spoken by the practitioner, from our beloved textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 228) : "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God."
