When I look back over the past four years and think of...
When I look back over the past four years and think of the many benefits that I have received from Christian Science, I feel very grateful.
In June, 1934, I was suffering from what was diagnosed by a specialist as pulmonary tuberculosis. I followed this physician's prescribed treatment as faithfully as I knew how, but at the end of three years I was worse than when I started. In June, 1937, I decided to leave the local sanatorium and try a different climate, in the hope that I might find something that would help me. While spending a day or two at home before leaving for the Southwest, I picked up a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which had been given to my thirteen-year-old son by his Sunday school teacher. I had heard very little about Christian Science up to that time and had no idea what it was. After reading a few pages of the first chapter, entitled "Prayer," I realized that here was something different from anything I had ever heard of before. I asked my son if I might take the book with me, and he was very glad to have me do so. He had heard in Sunday school what Christian Science was doing for others and he hoped it would do the same for me, although he said nothing to me about it at the time.
I was being divinely led, for at the rest home in Arizona where I decided to stay I was lovingly encouraged to study the textbook. The more I read, the more interested I became. After about three months I decided to ask a practitioner to help me. In about ten days I was healed and ready to come home, and I was very happy to be restored to my family again. During this time I was also healed of the smoking habit of twenty years' standing. Since then I have had many other physical healings, and I am glad to report some progress in the overcoming of faults of character.
