In the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 24)...

In the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 24) we read in part: "Testimony in regard to the healing of the sick is highly important. More than a mere rehearsal of blessings, it scales the pinnacle of praise and illustrates the demonstration of Christ, 'who healeth all thy diseases' (Psalm 103:3)."

I wish to testify to the healing of the tobacco habit. For many years I was a slave to this habit, using tobacco continually for smoking and chewing. Many times I tried the use of will power in the attempt to overcome it, but never succeeded, the false appetite seeming to increase rather than diminish, the longer I abstained from it.

One day, in studying Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I noticed these words on page 206: "Will-power is capable of all evil. It can never heal the sick, for it is the prayer of the unrigheous; while the exercise of the sentiments—hope, faith, love—is the prayer of the righteous." Then, instead of again using will power, I studied what our Leader says on the subject of infinite Mind, God, and of man made in His image and likeness. I reasoned from the standpoint of the omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience of God; that He is good, and that man, being spiritual, is forever at one with Him, reflecting only good; also that whatever is not good does not come from God. I denied the belief that the use of tobacco was good, and realized that evil has neither presence nor power, and therefore could not enslave me. After this there was no struggle, no appetite to battle with; I was as free as if I never had had tobacco in my mouth.
