Utilizing Divine Law

Christian Scientists understand that law, in its real meaning, is the expression of God, Principle. It manifests the nature of God, and is therefore not merely something operating in and upon substance, but is itself the expression of substance—substance in evidence. It manifests the will and nature of God. This is all the law there really is.

What in human experience are commonly called laws—laws of economics, laws of matter, laws enacted by human governments, and so on—are false beliefs about law, which obtain only in mortal mind. They present a limited and distorted sense of law, which is sometimes better than at other times but always incorrect, because in greater or less degree it assumes the reality of matter.

It is helpful to consider how such so-called laws differ from real law. They are not always enforced, for one thing. This is true, particularly, of many laws on the statute books. Human will is thus often plainly seen to be without the power to make itself effective. But the divine will is always one with infinite power and always fully established. Human laws, especially those enacted by legislatures, may be wise or unwise, whereas divine law always expresses divine wisdom. Also, human or material laws may be either beneficent or the contrary. Indeed, the same material law or set of laws may be helpful at one time and destructive at another. The so-called laws which produce fire, for example, may one day comfortably warm a home and another day burn it down. The law of God, however, is "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever," and is always beneficent. It is unchangeably a law of perfect health, harmony, completeness, joy, and love to every creature, every idea, of God.
