Sunday School Notes and Comments
In working with very young children in the Christ Science Sunday School there is a compelling demand for preparatory scientific thinking in order to bring out good results. Consecrated preparation is of course expected of the teacher, irrespective of the age of the pupils, and with the tiniest members of the Sunday school it is quite obvious not only to the teacher but also to the neighboring classes whether love, peace, order, and interest or contrary beliefs are being manifested.
There are certain points that should be particularly emphasized in working with little children. First in importance is a consciousness of the presence of divine Love, and of a God-given ability to impart this to the children. A little child naturally responds at first more readily to the expression of Love than to an explanation of Love. The child is reassured by finding love, gentleness, patience, and kindliness expressed. If one realizes that Love is ever present and impartial, then one can know that a child cannot feel deprived of the atmosphere of Love. This is particularly helpful in welcoming newcomers, since it should eliminate any feeling of strangeness, timidity, or fear.
A logical next step is to destroy belief in the suggestions which often present themselves to little children in such forms as willfulness, disobedience, restlessness, and so forth. These tendencies must be seen as impersonal error, attempting to deprive the children of the blessings which the Christian Science Sunday School has to offer. A firm denial must be made of the supposed existence of such errors, a denial sustained by the knowledge that they do not originate in the one Mind, and hence have no existence, power, or channel through which to operate.
