Bible Notes
[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on November 9, 1941.]
"Put off concerning the former conversation the old man" (Eph. 4:22)—Here, as in other Biblical passages, the Greek word "anastrophe" refers not to "conversation" in the modern sense of the term, but rather to "manner of life, behavior, conduct." Moffatt suggests: "You must lay aside the old nature which belonged to your former course of life;" and Good-speed: "You must lay aside with your former habits your old self."
"His father ... fell on his neck" (Luke 15:20)—This represents a literal translation of the Greek, but the action suggested is more clearly expressed according to modern idiom in the words of Weymouth's translation (Fifth Edition): "His father ... threw his arms round his neck."
"Put a ring on his hand" (Luke 15:22)—Godet contends that the "ring" in question was doubtless a signet ring, "the mark of a free man, fitted to express an independent will," and thus something more than an article of adornment.
