The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Ilford, Essex, England (First Church).

Lecturer: John Henry Weer; introduced by Miss Anna Doughty, who said:—

In Jeremiah it is written, "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord."

It is clear that if we are to experience the goodness of God we must understand Him. This necessity is emphasized in Proverbs, where it is written, "With all thy getting get understanding."

Every student of Christian Science will testify that, in the degree that he has gained an understanding of God, he has been released from the claims of error. In my own experience, with my first glimpse of Truth I was healed of a physical trouble for which I had had unavailing medical treatment during thirty years.

Grand Rapids, Michigan (First Church).

Lecturer: Thomas E. Hurley; introduced by W. Keith Dickinson, who said:—

Christ Jesus once said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." It is recorded throughout the New Testament that all those who accepted this invitation and believed on his name were given rest; were healed of sin, sickness, all manner of physical disabilities, and were even raised from the dead. That the presence of the personal Jesus was not requisite to the healing is attested by the restoration of health to the nobleman's son and the centurion's servant. It was what Jesus knew of Love and Truth that healed the sick.

Christian Science reveals to us today the nature of eternal, impersonal Truth, which is again being demonstrated, as in Jesus' time. Many thousands can testify that the revelation of Truth in Christian Science has healed them of sin, disease, and physical limitation of all kinds.

Karlsruhe, Germany (First Church).

Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by Mrs. Hilde Koch, who said (as translated from the German):—

The Bible states again and again that in the knowledge of God, Truth, lies salvation for all mankind from every difficulty, from sin, sickness, and death; and our great Master, who taught the truth about God, proved this to be a fact. May our lecture today send into our hearts a clear gleam of the light of Christian Science, which enables us to understand God, "that all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else;" and that "they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord."

Leavenworth, Kansas (First Church).

Lecturer: Dr. John M. Tutt; introduced by Mrs. Minnie Lee Fisher, who said:—

Centuries ago, a young man who had been called upon to assume the responsibilities of a king was asked what he most desired. His reply was, "An understanding heart." We are told that because Solomon chose so wisely he was also given riches and honor.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is this statement (p. 390): "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." Through the study of Christian Science we learn to understand God, and to accept the harmony which is His gift to all.

I am grateful to be one of thousands in all parts of the world, and in all walks of life, who have been lifted from darkest despair and suffering into health and harmony through the study and application of Christian Science.
