Signs of the Times

Topic: Listening and Meditation

[Hugh Martin, M. A., in the Christian World, London, England]

In the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter eight, verse eighteen, you will find recorded these words of Jesus: "Take heed, therefore, how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have."

This is a surprising saying. If it had run: "Take heed what you say, for you never know how far-reaching may be the influence of your words," we could more readily understand it. Is not the responsibility with the man who speaks? Why warn the listener?
