During a period of eleven years previous to 1936, I had been prejudiced against what I conceived Christian Science to be. About eight years ago, I was a witness to the healing of a semi-invalid, which had taken place solely through her application of what she had learned from a careful study of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. It was so amazing to me that I could not believe it. I attributed her healing to one of those things that "just happen." I later witnessed the healing of several other cases of severe sickness and disease, solely through Christian Science treatment. These healings caused me to do some thinking.

In 1936, along with other afflictions, I experienced what the medical doctors called a nervous breakdown. My condition gradually became worse under medical treatment and was eventually pronounced incurable.

One day a student of Christian Science informed me that I could regain my health if I would earnestly and searchingly study the Christian Science textbook and then adhere to its teachings. I was skeptical, but recalling that I had witnessed the healing of what medical science considers to be incurable disease solely through Christian Science treatment, and, knowing that the person who recommended it to me had excellent health and good common sense, I resolved to try it, notwithstanding criticism and condemnation from well-meaning friends. After a careful reading of the textbook, which was both restful and profoundly interesting, it was obvious to me that my prejudice had been positively ridiculous and based upon ignorance.
