If for no other reason than that of a better comprehension...

If for no other reason than that of a better comprehension of the presence of God, I should be everlastingly grateful to Christian Science. But this is only one of the many blessings which I have received from Mrs. Eddy's teaching. My early training by fine, conscientious parents had given me a sense of the power and love of God. In time of great need, however, I seemed to lack the confidence inspired by a sense of the presence of God.

Many years following a prolonged period of sleeplessness, there came a state of utter collapse, a time when all human help failed. It was in this emergency that I groped blindly to find the living God. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 1), "Desire is prayer." As if in immediate answer to this prayer, a member of my family called a friend who is a Christian Scientist, asking her to come to me. This she did at once. She told me that God is everywhere, and she read to me from Science and Health. The confidence inspired by this revelation very soon lifted the burden from my disturbed thought, and I was free.

Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 559), "Murmur not over Truth, if you find its digestion bitter." The struggles and conflicts of my early study of Christian Science compelled me to make vigorous efforts to grasp and to apply the truth, step by step.
