Among the Churches

Current Notes

Independence Reporter.

INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS (First Church).—The local First Church of Christ, Scientist, at the corner of Main and Eleventh Streets, was the scene of two very impressive services on Sunday, October 22, 1939, when the church was formally dedicated. Both at the morning and afternoon services large crowds were present.

The First Reader gave a very interesting and complete history of the church at both services.

First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Independence, Kansas, was recognized in 1902 as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. In the same year, the first Christian Science lecture in Independence was given. A Reading Room was established and kept open on Tuesday and Friday afternoons of each week, and free distribution of literature was begun. In 1903 the plan was adopted to send the collection taken the first Sunday in each month to the building fund for the Extension of The Mother Church.
