When I turned to Christian Science for help, I "had suffered many things of many physicians," including operations and chiropractic treatment, "and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." I had suffered from the time I was a small child, had spent months in hospitals at different times, and the doctors finally diagnosed my illness as tubercular brain. I was becoming addicted to the drug habit, after long use. This frightened me, but my fight against it was weakened by my faith in its power to bring temporary relief from pain. During the space of a few years, when my health had been better, I had married, and I now had two small children for whom I was unable to care. I was in deep despair.

One doctor, a man of great compassion, sent a Christian Science practitioner to call on me. I was grateful for her kindness to me at that time, but I was not quite ready to receive the truth she came to offer.

Soon after this, my husband took me from our home in Colorado to California, in the vain hope that another change of climate might help me. We brought our little son with us, leaving behind our baby girl, whom I never expected to see again. When we were leaving, some kind friends gave me this verse from Psalms: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
