Whence cometh peace? From whence the joyous song
That echoes in my heart the whole night long—
A song of praise and heartfelt gratitude
For grief grown less, and stubborn will subdued?

So long I sought to find where peace abode,
Yet sought in vain to find the gladsome road.
While pride and fear within my heart held sway,
And lack of gratitude obscured the way,
I found not peace, but weariness and pain.
With firmer faith I turned to God again—
From golden dawn till evening's setting sun,
I prayed Thy will, dear God, not mine, be done.

Then found I peace, and calm, the gladsome song
That ripples in my heart the whole night long.
