The Language of Science

Christ Jesus, the great demonstrator of the truth of being, once said to the disciples of John the Baptist, "Tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached." Yet, despite these mighty proofs of the truth of his teachings, even Jesus' disciples did not wholly understand the import of his words until after his crowning demonstration—the resurrection.

During the following centuries, because of varying interpretations of Christianity, more or less erroneous, the healing truth taught by Christ Jesus gradually became obscured and to a considerable extent lost to mankind. It was not until after the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866, and her subsequent spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures, including the Gospels, that the dogmatism which had shrouded Bible teachings was dispelled and their eternal spiritual truth revealed.

The title of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, indicates that its contents deal with Scriptural truths, which it elucidates clearly and logically in language readily comprehensible to humanity today. When Mrs. Eddy named her discovery Christian Science, many objected to the union of the two words because of the belief that the terms were irreconcilable. But, today, her use of the word "Science" has been vindicated by thousands who not only have had the Bible illumined through the study of Science and Health, but have found health and happiness by practicing the well-defined rules set forth in that book for demonstrating divine Principle.
