Item of Interest

There seems to have been some misunderstanding in the Field with regard to a statement published in the Christian Science Sentinel of August 13, 1938, under the heading "Wiser Distribution of the Monitor." The statement was intended, not to convey the impression that Christian Science churches and societies should discontinue the distribution of The Christian Science Monitor in boxes, but to caution distribution workers to avoid in any way giving the impression that the Monitor is a free publication. It will help to prevent such a misapprehension on the part of the general public if each copy of the Monitor distributed is stampted plainly in large colored letters, "Sample Copy." In this connection, attention is again called to the desirability of using for distribution purposes only noncurrent issues of the Monitor, that is, those that are dated at least two weeks before the time of their arrival in the locality where they are distributed.

It may be of interest to know that in the distribution work in Boston the Literature Distribution Committee of The Mother Church furnishes subscriptions for our daily newspaper to the libraries of some institutions, such as penal institutions, schools, and the like, thus affording them current copies daily. What branch churches shall do in this regard, however, is a matter for local determination, according to the circumstances and conditions involved. There is no objection, of course, to furnishing used copies of the Monitor of quite recent date, instead of paid subscriptions, for institutions and schools, if this seems the preferable procedure.

It is not desirable for Literature Distribution Committees to cease distribution of the Monitor, but rather to guard against the possibility of its being considered a gift paper.
