Lakewood, Ohio (First Church).—Dedication services for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Lakewood, were held in the church edifice, Detroit and Arthur Avenues, on Sunday, May 22, 1938, in the morning, afternoon, and evening. True simplicity and thanksgiving marked the occasion, when thousands of earnest members and friends from the various churches in the community thronged the beautiful structure.

This church, starting as a Christian Science Society, held its first public service in the McCaskey Block, Detroit and Belle Avenues, on January 23, 1910, after meeting at the homes of members since the early fall of 1909. On December 12 of the same year, a charter was received for a church.

The members purchased their lot on February 3, 1911. Excavation was begun in September of 1913, and the cornerstone laid the following month. Debt was cleared on the first unit in 1919.

Early in 1920, the superstructure was started, and finished on June 18, 1922, and the auditorium opened at an approximate cost of three hundred thousand dollars. The debt was officially wiped out on April 30, of this year [1938]. No Christian Science church is dedicated until its debt is paid.

The main auditorium, with its color scheme of tan and blue, seats approximately one thousand people; there is also a large gallery, where many hundreds more may be conveniently accommodated. The Sunday school room accommodates eight hundred children.

An amplifier system has been installed, enabling one to hear perfectly throughout the spacious interior.

The three-manual Skinner forty-nine-stop organ, with its chimes and echoes in addition to its harp productions, has an appealing, mellow tone.

A Christian Science Reading Room ha been maintained in connection with the church since its organization, and is now located nearly opposite the church at 15515 Detroit Avenue. Here all Christian Science literature may be freely read, borrowed, or purchased.—Suburban News and Herald.
