After I had groped for years in the darkness of the material...
After I had groped for years in the darkness of the material sense of existence, Christian Science came to me with its beautiful healing truths. I first heard of this Science through a friend who had gone to California in search of health. Upon her return she told me of her healing, and said that I, too, might be healed. She told me about the book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and referred me to a practitioner. I secured the book and consulted the practitioner.
Prior to this, I had not slept naturally for months, and had a great fear of everything, especially food. As a result, I was a victim of nervous prostration. It seemed that my condition was hopeless. The physicians who had attended me were very kind and had done everything possible to give me relief, but after operating, they said it was up to me, and that I should have to "battle it out." This was most disheartening, and I gave up in despair. I had read everything at hand, studied many isms, and had tried to fight the battle with so-called human will power. Reaching, as it seemed to me, the end of human endurance, I earnestly prayed that I might die and be free from these troubles. When I had reached this point, the thought presented itself, Oh, if only I had something to read that would help me! That thought was the beginning of the rescue, for in a short time my friend told me of Christian Science, and my prayer for something wholesome to read was answered through the writings of Mrs. Eddy and the Christian Science literature.
My healing was not instantaneous—in fact, it was only after months of treatment from a practitioner and constant study and effort on my part that the light began to dawn in my consciousness. There were long periods of discouragement and despair, but I had found the way, and there was nothing to do but to press on. Although I am still trying to prove the unreality of false belief, I do not so readily give way to discouragement.
