The Summons

I HEARD a voice that spoke and said:
"Awake, and turn ye from the dead;
O thou that sleepest long, awake,
And see the joyous morning break.
Arise, and in His image find
Thyself the perfect child of Mind."

The voice that Samuel knew I heard,
And in the hush my heart was stirred;
I caught, like softest whispering,
The rustle of an angel's wing
And heard within a quiet voice,
"Awaken, sleeper, and rejoice,
For His salvation shalt thou see
Who conquereth iniquity;
For, lo, he cometh girt with power—
Watch ye until the blessed hour."

Thus cometh He at dead of night
Or break of day, who walks in light;

Thus speaks the heavenly voice to all
Whose listening hearts obey the call.
Let him that heareth render heed,
And blessings shall be his indeed.
