Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

In the two newspapers published in the German language in Buenos Aires nothing has been reported which needed a corrective letter. The [1937] Annual Meeting of The Mother Church was prominently reported in both the English newspapers in Buenos Aires, including a photograph of the exterior of The Mother Church. The Golden Text and weekly excerpts from the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly were published regularly in the Standard, also the Golden Text in the Buenos Aires Herald. The German newspaper, the Deutsche La Plata Zeitung, is publishing in its church news column the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in German, with the Bible reference of the Golden Text. The Argentine Magazine, a monthly publication in English, occasionally reprints Monitor articles with due credit. At the time of the Peace Conference in Buenos Aires, the editor of the Buenos Aires Herald published in a prominent part of the newspaper two long articles from the Monitor with just acknowledgment. Under the heading "Power of Prayer," the Buenos Aires Herald published a series of articles expressing the views of prominent local clergymen and laymen of different denominations. For the Christian Science viewpoint a religious article entitled "Power of Prayer" was chosen and published with due credit to the Monitor.

During the year four lending libraries, including the Young Women's Christian Association, were asked to accept the Christian Science textbook. Two of these libraries supply German literature, and the German translation of the textbook was accepted. The Young Women's Christian Association accepted in addition the French and German translations of the textbook. In one library the biography, "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur, was placed, together with the textbook, and in another the German translation of this biography was placed in the same way. All the books which were accepted into the libraries carried a bookplate in the inside front cover, giving the names of our Leader's other writings, and were also properly catalogued.

The special Coronation edition of the Monitor was most enthusiastically received by newspapermen. One editor, who had appeared difficult of approach, was so impressed by the Coronation issue that he wrote a lengthy eulogistic editorial. He was interested that what he regarded as an American journal could have presented so fully and impartially news of such vital interest to British readers. He made special mention of the inset, and of the quotations from Emerson and Milton. A short time after the editorial appeared, the editor accepted a free subscription to the Monitor in exchange for advertising.
