Gratitude, Humility, Joy

THREE spiritual qualities which we all very much need are gratitude, humility, and joy. Accurately speaking, these qualities belong to us inherently and inalienably from the nature of the real man's relation to his Maker, God. They are interwoven with one another in their expression and application.

Gratitude, in particular, is a part of every Christian Science treatment, and it should be a part of each Christian Scientist's everyday living. "Gratitude," says Mary Baker Eddy on the third page of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "is much more than a verbal expression of thanks." It is an appreciation of God's goodness which is to be lived, not merely talked about. And it is an awareness of the nearness and positive strength of His love that casts out evil and raises the sick into the consciousness of health and ability.

Thankfulness arises from the knowledge that, as the Bible teaches, man is made in the image and likeness of God. He is, in Truth, the continuing expression of the intelligence, Life, Love, Soul, Principle, which constitute Deity. "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God," exclaims the disciple John; and he goes on to assure us not only that we are "called the sons of God," but that indeed "now are we the sons of God."
