Six years ago, after numerous examinations by reputable physicians and after being under observation for two weeks in one of the country's outstanding hospitals, I was told that I had acture tuberculosis and that both lungs were affected. Little hope was felt for my recovery. My sister was told by the doctors that complete rest in a sanitarium for five years might "pull me through," but that I probably never would be able to resume an active, normal existence, and most certainly would never be able to return to work.

Full of fear, I listened to this sentence upon my life, and although I knew something of the teachings of Christian Science at that time from a slight perusal of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, it never occurred to me that it would be of any help in a problem such as I was then faced with. Consequently, I followed the physician's advice and went to a sanitarium.

I was there but a few hours when I sensed the hopelessness of the situation from a medical standpoint. I desperation I reached for my copy of Science and Health, which my sister, although not a Scientist, had left with me, and I prayed that I might gain an understanding of this Science which taught the healing power of God, good. I started studying in earnest, the book seldom being out of my hands. Enlightenment came when I called a practitioner and she left with me the words, "Man lives in Spirit, not matter." At first I did not know what she meat, but after I had pondered these words for hours at a time the truth began to unfold in my consciousness and I started looking away from the body into Spirit or Mind. Further study revealed to me that in good thoughts we glimpse God, in whom is no sickness. My days became filled with watching my thinking. Much to my surprise I found that for years I had been entertaining thoughts of resentment, criticism, and selfishness. These I knew had to be exchanged for good thoughts if I were to find God and experience health.
