Der Bund

In Der Bund recently, in the report of the meeting of the Synod of the (Protestant) church, it is stated: "Many of the withdrawals [from the church] were caused by the attraction of Christian Science. The appeal to the need for corporeal welfare and physical strength is cleverly calculated; but the result received in this way is poor in comparison to the rich powers lying in the correctly understood gospel, much too little understood and used."

Here Christian Science is presented as if its appeal were nothing but a clever calculation to reach a material aim. Now that is not so. As to the question of what is Christian and what is not Christian there are many different views. When Mary Baker Eddy stepped befroe the world with her teaching, the churches closed the door upon this teaching, and so impelled her to found a church of her own. Even today it is impossible that anybody could honestly and sincerely, at the same time, adhere to two different religious creeds. And yet every upright Christian strives after the understanding and practice of "the rich powers lying in the correctly understood gospel, much too little understood and used," as the writer quite properly says.
