The Christian Scientist

The word "Christian" means more than that one is merely following the man Jesus. Pure Christianity as taught by Jesus to his followers stands for selfless demonstration of Christlike qualities. It consists not only of speaking the Word of God fearlessly, but also of proving the power of God to heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, and reform the sinner.

A study of the life of Jesus, the master Christian, shows him not only saving others, but teaching them how to save themselves. "I am the way, the truth, and the life," he said. Thinking as Christ Jesus thought, reflecting God, divine Mind, speaking the truth to all manner of evil as he did—living the Christ as he did—is the only way to heaven, harmony. The gentleness of the Nazarene evidenced his great love for humanity, a compassion of so understanding a nature that it separated the chaff from the wheat. He "rebuked the fever" and healed the one suffering from it. With deep and beautiful compassionate understanding he said to another, "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." So complete was his understanding that when Peter asked how oft he should forgive, the Master replied, "Until seventy times seven."

Jesus judged not according to the outward appearance; he judged "righteous judgment." He never allowed himself to be swayed by personal sense; nor did he express personal opinions. He never was trapped into believing the lies of material sense. Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 476, 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick."
