For thirteen weeks I had been forced to lie on my back...
For thirteen weeks I had been forced to lie on my back with what the doctor termed rheumatic fever, phlebitis, and cancer of the liver. According to the medical faculty, my case appeared hopeless. I was heavily wrapped in flannel bandages and unable to move. I was just becoming interested in Christian Science, but did not know how to apply the little that I had read. My books were all kept from me, and there was nobody in my home town who could speak with me of the truth that frees.
Not hearing from me for several weeks, a friend wrote and asked what was the cause of my slackness. Despite the bandages on my hands, I wrote a few words to that friend. What I wrote or how I wrote, I do not know, but it was sufficient for her to ask a friend in London to pay me a visit. This friend, she knew, would raise me from the "slough of despond."
It was arranged that the London friend should spend a week end with me. I was told she would be down on the Friday evening, and knowing she was bringing her knowledge of Christian Science to me, I immediately had the desire to leave my bed and walk to the station to meet her. My own shoes were of no use, for my legs and feet not only were wrapped in flannel bandages, but were of abnormal size. However, I demanded a pair of men's boots, and in these I walked to the station and met my friend, much against the wishes of my household.
