The experience of a family who, quite unconsciously,...

The experience of a family who, quite unconsciously, was solving the question, "What is truth?" and the lasting and satisfactory results of that search, which led them to accept the teaching of Christian Science, were so unusual, that I think it should be helpful to others to tell about them.

In 1913, we moved from the city to a home in the country, hoping to find greater health for two very delicate children. To provide myself with solid reading matter, I bought a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to carry with us. We had attended occasional testimony meetings and lectures and were very much interested in all we had heard. Much of that textbook was discussed in the family circle, with no thought that it would ever become a necessity to us. Sun and air and the freedom of the country were all we thought the children needed to bring back their health; but the passages in the textbook (p. 413) relative to the health of children cleared our vision and improvement was rapid. Medicine was forgotten. Divine Mind was left free to regulate their condition.

When a pet collie appeared very ill one day, the daughter to whom he belonged announced that she was going to help him in Christian Science and hoped to prove for herself the truth of that Science. Like Gideon of old, she was asking for a sign. So she remained at his side most of the night, reading and working for him. To her great joy, through that slight understanding of Christian Science, her labor of love was rewarded, and he was completely restored. That experience gave us all the assurance that we were moving in the right direction, and that we should study the Bible and Science and Health more faithfully.
