More than fifteen years ago, when I was out of work...
More than fifteen years ago, when I was out of work and had very little money, I was prevailed upon to go to a Christian Science practitioner for help in finding work. I knew absolutely nothing about Science at that time, and I must confess that I had little faith in its ability to help me in my problem of unemployment. After my first visit to the practitioner, during which she very lovingly told me many things about Christian Science, I immediately started to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly.
I continued to go to the practitioner for help, but at the end of six weeks I still had not found employment. Among other things, the practitioner told me that if I would keep my consciousness free from fear and doubt, I should be guided by divine Mind to my rightful place of employment. One day, after leaving her office, I was walking down the street trying as best I could to clear my consciousness of fear, doubt, and disappointment, when suddenly the thought came to me to go to see a certain man. I had been to see that man six weeks before, but he had told me there was absolutely no position open for me in his company. Nevertheless, I again went to his office, and when I was shown in, these were the first words he said to me: "Well, it seems as though Providence sent you here today; there is a position open, and I think you can fill it." Then I realized that the thought which had come into my consciousness, and which had led me to this man, was truly an angel from God; Mrs. Eddy defines "angels" in part as "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect" (Science and Health, p. 581).
During the years following, as I have learned more of Christian Science, and that true happiness is in giving instead of getting, my life has been continually blessed both spiritually and materially. Christian Science has changed my whole life; it has healed me of many faults of disposition, including a violent temper. It has made me want to be a better man, and to strive to reflect the qualities of a true Christian Scientist.
