True Witnesses

In Isaiah we read, "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen." What a sacred privilege, to be chosen as God's servant to bear witness to His almighty power! When one is called to be a witness, he must know to what he is bearing witness. On page 465 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, defines God as "incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love."

It is helpful to consider these seven synonyms for God in connection with our duties as His witnesses. In bearing witness to God as infinite Mind, we refuse to believe that there is any place or opportunity for any other supposed mind to operate or find expression. This would of course preclude any sense of confusion, personal domination, or hypnotism.

In witnessing to God as Spirit, we accept the unchanging fact stated in Science and Health (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all"—a basic truth in the practice of Christian Science which has brought about many instantaneous healings. The knowledge that there is but one Spirit frees us from the belief that there can be any communication with or control by so-called evil spirits. Jesus' whole experience was based on the supremacy of the one Spirit, God.
